The best crypto exchange in the UK, dated and FCA-checked

Which crypto exchanges are FCA-registered to serve UK customers, how the financial-promotions regime affects you, and how to fund an account with Faster Payments — the UK-specific picture, checked 2026-09-10. Not financial advice.

The best crypto exchange for a UK resident is one that is FCA-registered or authorised to serve you here — which, since October 2023, is a shorter list than the app stores suggest. This page covers the UK-specific picture: who is registered, what the FCA's promotion rules mean for you in practice, and how deposits work. It does not tell you what to buy or where any price is heading.

What FCA registration actually means for you

It means an exchange has cleared the FCA's money-laundering registration and can lawfully market crypto to UK consumers under the financial-promotions regime that went live on 8 October 2023 (PS23/6). In practice you will notice three things the rules require: a prominent risk warning before you sign up, a 24-hour cooling-off period the first time you invest with a firm, and no sign-up 'refer a friend' cash incentives — those were banned. A firm promoting crypto to UK users without the right permission is committing a criminal offence, so an unregistered overseas exchange advertising to you is a red flag, not a bargain.

You can check any firm yourself on the FCA's Financial Services Register and its cryptoasset registration list, and cross-check the FCA Warning List — MEXC, for example, appears on it. When in doubt, verify before you deposit.

FCA-registered exchanges UK residents can use

The registered, retail-facing shortlist below is where most UK users should look. These are affiliate links to exchanges registered to serve UK customers; Bitstamp is included on merit and runs no affiliate programme, so it pays us nothing. Fees and card tiers change, so treat the 'best for' column as a starting point and confirm current pricing on each site.

For most beginners, Coinbase and Kraken are the easiest accountable places to start; Kraken's 'Pro' screen is markedly cheaper than any one-click buy button once you are comfortable. eToro suits people who also hold shares, Crypto.com leans on its app and Visa card, and Bitpanda brings an EU-style product to UK users. All are affiliate links to FCA-registered firms.

Which big exchanges UK users cannot use

Binance closed new UK sign-ups in October 2023 and has not reopened general retail onboarding; KuCoin and MEXC are not FCA-registered for UK consumers, and MEXC sits on the FCA Warning List. Bybit re-entered the UK in a limited form via the FCA-regulated firm Archax in late 2025. We name these venues so you recognise the landscape, but we never link them, and reaching a barred exchange with a VPN breaks its terms and risks your funds — see our foreign-exchange and VPN dispatch.

Funding a UK account and paying UK tax

Most UK exchanges accept Faster Payments bank transfers (usually free and near-instant) and debit cards (quick but with an added card fee); many UK banks block or limit credit-card crypto purchases. Bank transfer is the cheaper rail. On tax, HMRC generally treats disposals of crypto as subject to Capital Gains Tax, with income tax possible on some earnings and certain staking rewards — the annual CGT allowance has shrunk in recent years. We are not tax advisers; our does your country tax crypto dispatch points you to the concepts and to HMRC, and for anything material you should speak to a professional.

How UK fees and deposits really work

The cheapest way to buy on a UK exchange is almost always a Faster Payments bank transfer into your account, then a trade on the exchange's advanced or 'pro' screen. The one-click 'buy' button most beginners reach for is convenient but expensive: it bundles a wider spread, and if you pay by card there is a card fee on top. Kraken's Pro interface and Coinbase's Advanced Trade both charge a small percentage fee instead of that spread, which is why we point beginners toward them once the first nervous purchase is behind them. This is a point about fee structure, not a nudge to trade more — trading more is not the goal, and it is not advice.

Watch three costs that catch UK users out: the spread on simple buys, card fees when you skip bank transfer, and the network fee to withdraw crypto to your own wallet. None of these is hidden if you look, but the simple buy screen makes them easy to miss. If you plan to move coins to self-custody, check the withdrawal fee before you choose an exchange — it varies more than the trading fee does.

UK tax, in brief and not as advice

HMRC generally treats disposing of crypto — selling it, swapping one coin for another, or spending it — as subject to Capital Gains Tax, and treats some activity, such as certain staking or airdrop income, as taxable income. The annual CGT allowance has been cut sharply in recent years, so gains that once fell inside it may now be reportable. We are not tax advisers and this is not tax advice: keep records of every transaction, read HMRC's cryptoassets manual, and for anything material speak to an accountant. Our does your country tax crypto dispatch points to the concepts and the official guidance.

Questions at the border

Is Binance legal in the UK?
Using Binance is not itself illegal for a UK individual, but Binance is not FCA-registered to onboard new UK retail customers and closed new UK sign-ups in October 2023. It cannot lawfully run consumer promotions to UK users. We name it for context and do not link it. If you want an exchange with UK protections, choose an FCA-registered one such as Coinbase or Kraken. Checked 2026-09-10 — verify current status.
Do I have to pass KYC on a UK exchange?
Yes. Every FCA-registered exchange must verify your identity under anti-money-laundering rules — typically photo ID and proof of address. That is a consumer protection, not an obstacle, and trying to avoid it with false details or another country's documents breaks the exchange's terms and can freeze your account. If an exchange lets you trade with no identity checks at all, treat that as a warning sign.
What is the cheapest way to buy crypto in the UK?
Generally, fund your account by Faster Payments bank transfer rather than a card, and use an exchange's advanced or 'pro' trading screen rather than its one-click buy button. The simple buy button bundles a wider spread; the pro interface charges a small percentage fee instead. This is a fee-structure point, not a recommendation to trade — and none of it is financial advice.
